One dozen sexual assaults, some of them crew gang rapes of passengers, were reported, and through attorney representation, were settled by the cruise lines, out of court. Victims were age 12 and up. The assailants were crew and/or passengers.
- Cabin stewards, casino dealers, waiters, security staff, musicians, dancers, hairdressers and managers were among those accused of sexual assaults, rape, sodomy and molestation aboard Destiny, Imagination and other Carnival ships, according to a Carnival Cruise Line response to a lawsuit filed by a Carnival Cruise Line employee. Some were abductions to crew locations on board the ship, some victims were drugged through beverages, some were raped in their cabins. They total 62 from 1999 to 2004.That is only the number of rapes reported.
What To Do If You Become A Cruise Ship Victim Of Sexual Assault
- Report to security and the ship's doctor immediately.
- Make a full report of the incident facts.
- Insist that the cruise ship doctor do a rape kit.
- If the cruise ship refuses to do a rape kit, have one done immediately upon reaching the nearest port of call.
- If the nearest port of call also refuses to do a rape kit, get one done immediately upon returning to your homeland. Try not to disturb the crime scene evidence on your body if there is any delay in getting the rape kit. You need to preserve any DNA that may be there.
- If you have been physically battered as well, take photographs of your injuries.
- While your mind is fresh with the event, write down a journal of the event, including every little detail, even the most insignificant details that relate to the time before the incident, during the incident, and after the incident. Include crew names, times, places, things crew said to you, and things crew did in response to your incident. Save this for your attorney.
- Upon returning to your homeland, make a report to police authorities as well as any reports you may have already made.
- Contact an attorney who will protect your rights.
According to the National Victim Center, an advocacy group, 84 percent of rape victims in America do not report the crime to police. Using that percentage, that means it is possible there were as many as 400 actual sexual assaults on Carnival Cruise Lines.
The truth is, the percentage of non-reporting victims could be much higher, due to the fact that the rape took place on a cruise ship, and many more people (cruise staff) in addition to police, would be privy to the information, surrounding the crime. This would increase the reluctance of victims to report the crime.
