Passengers who signed up for an Elderhostel cruise, a Boston-based group that offers educational programs for older adults were aboard the Moby Dick when she sunk off the Galapagos Islands today. The Galapagos are located 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador.
The little cruise ship sank quickly after sea conditions changed suddenly and two large waves swamped her near the Galapagos island of Santa Fe. The boat stayed afloat for 20 to 30 minutes before capsizing.
Her crew, all Ecuadorean survived.
Richard M. Sayre, 70, and his wife, Diane were aboard the ship when the MV Moby Dick sank in high seas. Sayre was missing, never found and his wife Diane's body was recovered.
Also missing are Robert Donna, 75, and Lyon Zeiler, 75.
Navy and private boats searched for the three elderly Americans missing.
A nearby yacht arrived 10 minutes later and began rescuing passengers.
