Menandro Lim Lanzar
Crew Member Arrested With Child Pornography
Norwegian Cruise Line's Jewel - October 23, 2009
Lanzar may be charged with both smuggling child pornography into the country and possession of child pornography.
The integrated Halifax Regional Police-RCMP Internet child exploitation unit has been notified of the seizure.
Blair MacDonald, a criminal investigator with the Canada Border Services Agency, said Mr. Lanzar was inspected as he was getting off the ship at Pier 22.
Lanzar working aboard the Jewel, was employed as a quarter master. He was remanded to the Central Nova Scotia Correctional Facility in Dartmouth until this coming Tuesday, when he returns to court.
Returning to court, Lanzar pleaded guilty in Halifax provincial court to charges of importing and possessing child pornography.
The files related to the charges were horrendous. One of the video clips depicted a woman sexually abusing a two-year-old boy wearing diapers. The other was of a naked girl who appeared to be about 13.
Indicating a deeper problem aboard Norwegian Jewel, Lanzar told Judge Michael Sherar that he got the child pornography files from a fellow crew member aboard Norwegian Jewel.
It sounds like the ship needs to be boarded with all cell phones and laptops inspected in order to get to the bottom of the problem. This could be the floating cell of a child pornogprahy ring.
Judge Sherar sentenced Mr. Lanzar to 100 days on each charge, to be served concurrently.
Lanzar has just cost himself a job that generally pays $2,000-$3,000 a month as a cruise ship Quartermaster which should end his career.
Halifax has been cracking down on kiddy porn. Last month they arrested Carnival pastry chef Hendri Dharmawan when the found child pornography on his personal electronics.
Menandro Lim Lanzar, 31, a crew member aboard Norwegian Cruise Line's Jewel, was arrested Friday, October 23, 2009 while the ship was docked at Pier 22 on the Halifax, Nova Scotia waterfront.
Lanzar said to be from the Philippines, was in possession of child pornography on his personal cell phone when Canadian police arrested him.
